Elena Poiata

Elena received her BA from University of Pennsylvania in Cinema Studies and Biology and after briefly working in biotechnology, went on to an MS in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology at Yale University.

Elena is interested in gender and gender roles in Soviet and post-Soviet society: how they were shaped by political doctrine and how they are reflected in literature, cinema, and culture. She is also interested in cultural colonialism and the idea of the "other" in the Soviet and post-Soviet space. Elena is originally from Moldova and speaks Romanian, Russian, English, and French (not necessarily in that order).
